Today everyone was on about the ultimate white dress…as worn by her now Royal Highness Princess Kate. Although, undoubtedly, the ultimate white dress is very important to all us girls, we can however never discredit the power of the perfect little black dress. You can dress it up, dress it down, wear it to work and then afterwards, with a change of accessories, to that after-work party. Whether you have that sweet little number in your closet already or you are still searching for it, we found somebody to help you. Her name is Gwyneth Paltrow and her blog is called GOOP (http://goop.com/). Her blog is a candid portrayal of all that she holds dear, and, of course, one of the things she holds most dear is the little black dress.
Thanks Gwynnie.

This place is every cooks dream. A peaceful place filled with books…glorious books, and the aromas of freshly ground coffee and the cake of the day. Das Koch Kontor, situated in the Karolinenviertel in Hamburg, is the brainchild of Martina Olufs and has been around since 2006. She has created a space which has a similar concept to that of ‘Books for Cooks’ in London. It is a bookshop which sells only cookery books, combined with a small cafe and a cookery school. It is possible to enjoy lunch there 5 days of the week, freshly prepared by Martina. She changes the menu every day and gets her inspiration from all the wonderful cookbooks surrounding her. Das Koch Kontor also regularly hosts cookery classes featuring guest chefs who will teach you to cook everything from homemade pasta, to tapas or even how to make the most of the approaching asparagus season. A cookery lesson at Das Koch Kontor would make a thoughtful gift for somebody special or just an alternative night out with some good friends. Best of all, after slaving over the hot stove, relax at the beautifully set dinner table with your friends enjoying a glass of wine and devour what you have cooked.

Located in the truly breathtaking and, appropriately named, Happy valley in Franschoek is The Conservatory. It is a basically a very big greenhouse nestled between mountains, vineyards and lavender fields. It is essentially a blank canvas for any function your heart may desire and thanks to the glass ‘walls’ the spectacular view paints a bright and ever-changing backdrop. South Africa is renowned for its good weather, but one has the feeling that come rain or shine the weather could never deter from this impressive vista. In summer slide back a few glass panels and let the sunshine and the scent of lavender inside. In winter light the fireplaces and witness the drama of a rainstorm, or of clouds rolling swiftly over the Franschoek mountains while safely ensconced with your loved ones inside.
It is perfect for weddings, parties in general, that important business lunch, film shoots or even just for a lunch in the winelands with 120 of your closest friends. They have an on site party planner who can advise you on how to best proceed when planning your soiree. There also have a luxurious 3 – bedroomed villa on the premises so one would not have far to stroll after enjoying the fruits (a.k.a one of the many fine wines of the region) of Happy Valley.

Heather Moore is a South African designer and illustrator who is inspired by the world around her. Nature is of particular interest to her and you see this when looking at her screenprinted tea towels, napkins, aprons and pillows. So, next time you go to a dinner party, instead of giving flowers as a hostess gift why not give one of Heathers screenprinted leaf or pincushion tea towels or perhaps one of her screenprinted linen aprons for the cook. It is also possible to buy her screen printed fabric by the metre which comes in handy when you have always wanted to re-upholster that vintage couch in a herd of red Duiker (small antelope) or in a flock of teal coloured birds. If you are not in Cape Town, Heather’s products can be bought online at Etsy.
